Updated: #Hashtags

If you are a Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Vine or well internet user in general, you have probably come across hashtags. They are absolutely everywhere. But what is a hashtag? Well a hashtag is any words, phrases, initialism, abbreviation or acronym which is proceeded by the hash or pound sign #. The hashtag was originally intended as a way to categorize content to make web searches quicker and easier.

They can be annoying if used inappropriately for example #MyHashTagsAreBetterThanYours but if used correctly the are a source of endless information and interesting content.

Hashtags first surfaced in old school Internet Relay Chats – IRC’s were the older siblings to today’s wild young social media outlets. After the success in IRC’s hashtags then quickly became popular on emerging social medias. Twitter blew up the hashtag into mainstream popularity, initially using them as a tool for “tweet chats”.  Tweet chats are like open group discussions around a particular topic. Current tweet chats which are useful to beauty and beauty bloggers include #MakeupChat and #BBloggersRequired.

Of course anyone can make a hashtag up, you can tag your content as anything you like but that may not be the best way to go about sharing content or finding content that interests you. If you keep them short and sweet and specific to your content you will do well. Make sure to use capitalisation to break up the tag so that it is easy to comprehend. In the online beauty world there are a number of major players in the hashtag race for sharing and finding what you are looking for. The trick with hashtags is to make them to the point.

I will try and keep this as up to date as possible but the best way to keep up with hashtags is simply to keep an eye on trending topics. On certain days you will find that the tag #makeupchat will trend on twitter as it is chat day.

Instagram Specific Hashtags:

The trick with Instagram hash tagging, is that not only should you make sure your tags are relevant but also sharable. 1. I’ve seen so many beautybloggers hashtag #FF and each other on fridays, so I’m guessing it has something to do with friday, but do you know what it is? 🙂

  2. I’ve gotten responses from some companies asking for permission to feature my photos on Instagram in their feeds & such. I always tell
Them they can but then I never see them featured. It’s so weird. I’ve been asked by NYX, Cover FX, Kohls… It’s almost comical. I did get a photo featured in the feed of a local restaurant (they liked the pic I took of my cheeseburger). 😂
