Bridal Edition 5: Lips, Lips, Lips!

Just like the rest of your makeup, your lips have to be perfect for your big day. Of course you will have to reapply your chosen lip product a number of times throughout the day but there are some products and tricks to help your pout stay perfect. There are 2 different types of lip I do for Brides when I work with them, a light look and a heavy look. Both looks require a good prep before you even think about putting on the actual lip stick.

There are a few products I really love to use for lips. For this tutorial I will be using:

  • MAC Prep and Prime Lip Smother
  • MAC Creemesheen in Naked Proof
  • ELF Tinted Lip Balms
  • MAC Lip Liner in Boldly Bare
  • Lipcote Lipstick Sealer

After you have completed your foundation, wipe a wet wipe carefully over your lips to remove any foundation. Before you get to work on your eyes apply a good lip balm such as Clarins Hydraquench

Your lips will get a good moisture boost while you focus on your eyes. Once you have completed your eyes you can wipe away any remaining lip balm with a tissue, not a wet wipe and you can begin making your pout perfect!

First off lets take a look at the light look:

You have already completed step 1 which is to moisturise your lips and remove any excess product. After you have done this you can move onto step 2 which is to apply your chosen lip primer.

The simply apply your chosen lip tint! I used ELF Moisturising Lip Balm in Nude. It is a sheer and build able colour which not only contains the coveted SPF protect but it is incredibly easy to apply without a mirror, which makes it perfect for a busy day! As it is so sheer if you do give your new husband (or wife!) a big kiss on the lips any product transfere will be minimal and easy to clean! Winner

The heavy look requires a little bit more effort and unless you are comfortable with wearing so much product on your lips I would not advise this for your wedding day. However if you feel like you can give it a go then read on!

1. Clean off any foundation which remains on your lips.

2. Apply a good lip balm and leave for around 10 minutes.

3. Wipe away any excess lip balm after 10 minutes with a tissue (not a wet wipe) and apply your chosen primer. I am using MAC Prep and Prime Lip Smoother.

4. Take your chosen lip liner and line those lips up! Lining your lips stops the colour from “bleeding” into places it shouldn´t be.

5. Fill in your lips with the lip liner. This will help the lip stick stay put and help the colour last longer.

6. Apply a coat of your chosen lip colour. I am using MAC Cremesheen in Naked Proof.

7. Blot your lips on a tissue. Don´t worry if it feels like you have removed too much product. We are going to layer to help the colour last.

8. Apply another coat of your chosen lipstick.

9. If you wish you can apply a coat of Lipcote Lipstick Sealer. It makes your lips tingle a bit but acts as almost a varnish to keep your lipstick in place.

This second look will require a little more maintenance than the first method and you will need a mirror however the Lipcote does a pretty good job so there is no need to worry about transference or smudging. For my own wedding day I will be using the first method for the ceremony and then nipping to the toilets to apply the second method for the photographs. A stronger lip works better for photography but a subdued lip is better for smooching you significant other!

Nude or natural tones are the most popular lip looks for weddings. Here are 3 swatches I have found to be popular this summer:
